Prickly Pear Cactus
Prickly Pear Cactus - Opuntia microdasys
One of the most recognisable cacti in the world, and for good reason. The Prickly Pear grows in flat, paddle-shaped pads covered in clusters of tiny golden bristles, and as new pads sprout from the top of old ones it builds up a charmingly lopsided shape over time. No two plants end up looking quite the same.
Native to Mexico, Opuntia microdasys stores water in its thick pads and can go weeks between waterings without any fuss. It's one of the easiest plants you can own, and brilliant if you travel a lot or simply prefer your plants to get on without you.
This plant is also known as the Bunny Ears Cactus and Angel Wings Cactus.
One thing worth knowing: those golden bristles, called glochids, detach easily and can irritate skin. Use thick gloves or folded newspaper when handling or repotting. Place in a sunny spot with a few hours of direct light each day. Water every 2-3 weeks in summer, barely at all in winter.
Decorative pot not included.
